Florida Downspout Discharge and Erosion Planning Worksheet

A gutter project is incomplete when the plan stops at the bottom elbow. This worksheet traces every downspout to the place where roof water can infiltrate, drain, pond, erode, or create a new conflict.

A downspout discharge plan is a roof-to-ground map for each outlet. It records the roof zone, downspout, extension, receiving surface, slope, nearby features, and observed behavior during rain. The map helps a gutter installer explain the visible roofline scope and identify drainage, grading, foundation, or underground-pipe questions that need another qualified party.

This worksheet does not design a stormwater system or decide what a local authority, association, easement, or neighboring property permits. Surface and subsurface conditions can make a discharge point that looks convenient unsuitable.

Give every outlet a permanent ID

Walk the property from stable ground and label outlets D-01, D-02, and so on. Use the same IDs on photos, estimates, change orders, and the final walkthrough.

  • Roof contribution: name the roof plane, valley, or upper downspout feeding the gutter run.
  • Outlet assembly: record the outlet, downspout profile, elbows, straps, extension, and any underground connection.
  • Receiving surface: lawn, planting bed, mulch, gravel, pavement, splash block, drain, swale, or low area.
  • Nearby constraints: foundation, doorway, pool deck, walkway, driveway, equipment, property line, septic feature, utility, or retaining wall.
  • Evidence: splash marks, washed mulch, bare soil, sediment, standing water, settlement, algae, or repeated wetting.

Observe one ordinary rain without entering the flow path

From a safe, sheltered position, note the start time, approximate rain intensity, gutter overflow, joint leakage, downspout flow, extension movement, ponding, and the time visible surface water clears. Do not stand near lightning, floodwater, unstable soil, or a damaged electrical or structural condition.

The observation is evidence of what happened during that event, not proof of performance for every storm. NOAA Atlas 14 provides location-specific precipitation-frequency estimates used by designers; a homeowner rain note is not a substitute for those data or a hydraulic calculation.

Prefer an inspectable path

UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping guidance recommends aiming downspouts at pervious surfaces so water can soak into soil and extending discharge farther into the yard when needed to avoid pooling beside the foundation. Another UF/IFAS resource advises keeping redirected water on site in most instances rather than channeling it to streets or streams.

Those principles do not make every lawn or planting bed suitable. Record soil saturation, compacted areas, slopes, erosion, and the distance to sensitive features. Keep the outlet and any cleanout accessible so future maintenance does not require guessing where the water goes.

Put the complete path in the estimate

  • Outlet IDs and a marked elevation or site sketch.
  • Downspout and extension size, material, color, elbows, straps, and connection method.
  • Existing items removed, retained, reconnected, or excluded.
  • Final visible discharge point for each outlet.
  • Conditions assigned to grading, underground drainage, roofing, foundation, or another scope.
  • Flow review, cleanup, photos, warranty, and owner maintenance access.
